The Montreal Canadiens will get a welcome boost to their defensive corps tonight as Kaiden Guhle prepares to make his season debut against the Detroit Red Wings. Meanwhile, rookie goaltender Jacob Fowler will get another opportunity between the pipes as Montreal looks to put an end to its three-game losing streak.
Guhle Returns After Offseason Surgery
After missing training camp and the opening stretch of the season while recovering from a second surgery to repair an adductor muscle, Guhle is finally ready to return to the lineup.
His return comes at an important time for Montreal. The Canadiens’ defensive game has struggled over the past four contests, and the team has surrendered 17 goals during its current three-game losing streak.
Guhle recorded 11 points in 39 games last season and finished with a plus-5 rating. Beyond his offensive contributions, his return should provide Martin St. Louis with another reliable option on the blue line and additional flexibility when managing defensive pairings.
The Canadiens will need a much stronger defensive effort if they hope to turn things around against a Detroit team looking to take advantage of Montreal’s recent struggles.
Fowler Gets Another Opportunity
Jacob Fowler will make his second consecutive start in goal after allowing three goals on 18 shots in Thursday’s 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators.
The young goaltender was recalled from the Laval Rocket following a lower-body injury to Samuel Montembeault, who was injured during practice earlier this week.
Fowler faces another important test tonight. While his NHL experience remains limited, consecutive starts give him an opportunity to settle into the crease and demonstrate what he can bring to Montreal.
With the Canadiens struggling defensively, Fowler will need support from the players in front of him. Better coverage in the defensive zone, fewer turnovers and improved rebound control will all be important against Detroit.
Florian Xhekaj Sits as Montreal Adjusts Its Lineup
Martin St. Louis has also confirmed that Florian Xhekaj will not play tonight. The young forward missed the Canadiens’ previous two practices, although the team has not provided any details regarding a possible injury.
Montreal is expected to dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, an unusual lineup configuration that will require adjustments to the forward rotation.
The decision leaves questions about how St. Louis will distribute ice time among his remaining forwards and how the Canadiens will manage their matchups throughout the game.
With Guhle returning to the lineup and Xhekaj sitting out, Montreal will have a different look as it attempts to get back on track.
Montreal Needs a Response
Tonight’s matchup against Detroit marks the Canadiens’ final home game before they head to Buffalo to face the Sabres on Saturday.
The immediate priority is clear: stop the losing streak and tighten up defensively.
Allowing 17 goals over three consecutive defeats highlights the team’s recent difficulties. Guhle’s return should help, but one defenseman alone cannot fix the Canadiens’ defensive issues.
Montreal needs better puck management, stronger defensive-zone coverage and more consistent goaltending. Fowler will have another chance to prove himself, while Guhle’s presence could help stabilize a blue line that has struggled in recent games.
The big question is whether the Canadiens can turn things around against Detroit or whether their defensive problems will continue. With a demanding road game in Buffalo coming next, Montreal could use a strong performance in front of its home fans.
