The Montreal Canadiens signed winger Zachary Bolduc to a four-year contract extension on Sunday, worth $16.8 million total at a $4.2 million cap hit, running through the 2029-30 season. News of the deal was first reported by TSN’s Chris Johnston, with general manager Kent Hughes making it official Sunday from Gatineau.

Bolduc, 23, just wrapped his first season in Montreal after arriving from St. Louis last summer in a trade for Logan Mailloux — a deal that looked lopsided for the Blues at the time and looks even more that way now. He played 78 games in 2025-26, putting up 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points, and led all Canadiens forwards with 170 hits (only Arber Xhekaj, from the blue line, hit more). He carried that physical game into the playoffs too: 7 points in 19 games, the series-turning game-winner in Game 3 of the second round against Buffalo, and 47 more hits, second on the team.

Some background: the Blues took Bolduc 17th overall in the 2021 draft, and he’d put up 24 goals and 45 points in 97 games with St. Louis before landing in Montreal. The kid from Trois-Rivières is still a work in progress — his shot accuracy needs to catch up to his shot volume — but he’s 23 years old and already a physical, minutes-eating winger on a team that needed more of those.

On the money itself: this lands almost exactly between where the two sides probably started. Market projections had an eight-year term coming in closer to $6 million a season, with a short two-year bridge landing around $3.7 million. Four years at $4.2 million splits the difference — Hughes isn’t getting a discount, but he’s not overpaying for term either. It’s the kind of number both sides sign when they each believe Bolduc’s real payday is still one contract away.

There’s a real trade-off buried in that math, and it’s worth watching all season. Bolduc’s production has tracked almost exactly with his role: shoved into the top six early in the year, he scored three goals in three games; bumped down to the bottom six, and the offense dried up just as fast. That’s not unusual for a 23-year-old winger, but it means this contract is as much a bet on how Martin St. Louis deploys him as it is on Bolduc himself — usage decides more of a young player’s numbers than raw talent does, and this is about as clean an example of that as you’ll find on this roster.

Cap-wise, this fills in one more piece of the puzzle. After Chris Kreider’s one-year deal on Saturday, Montreal had roughly $7.6 million earmarked for Bolduc and Arber Xhekaj. Bolduc’s $4.2 million AAV takes the biggest bite out of that, leaving the Canadiens with an estimated $4.3 million — all of it now needed for Xhekaj, the last restricted free agent still unsigned. With the picks still in the cupboard (Montreal holds onto every first- and second-rounder for the next three drafts) and just one contract left to finish, Hughes still has room to make an in-season move if the right one comes along.
