Therrien first took the job in November 2000, and by 2001-02 had led an upstart Canadiens team to a first-round upset of the top-seeded Boston Bruins before losing to Carolina. He was let go in January 2003 following a slow start the next season. Brought back in June 2012 by new general manager Marc Bergevin, his second stint proved more substantial: Montreal won its division in 2012-13, then advanced to the Eastern Conference Final in 2013-14 — the franchise's deepest playoff run since 2010 — before repeating as division champions in 2014-15. Diminishing results and friction with star goaltender Carey Price contributed to his firing in February 2017, when he was replaced by Claude Julien.
