Jean Perron took charge of the Canadiens in 1985 and delivered a Stanley Cup championship in his very first season, an unlikely run best remembered for rookie goaltender Patrick Roy's Conn Smythe Trophy–winning performance. Over three seasons with Montreal, Perron compiled a 126-84-30 regular-season record and a 1986 playoff mark of 15-5. Increasing pressure and the demands of the job led Perron to resign on May 17, 1988. His tenure is remembered primarily for launching the Roy era and delivering the franchise's 23rd Stanley Cup.
