Grundman succeeded Sam Pollock as general manager in 1978 and won the Stanley Cup in his first year at the helm, the franchise's fourth straight championship. His tenure also included the draft selections of future stars Guy Carbonneau and Chris Chelios, but he is more often remembered for the 1980 decision to draft Doug Wickenheiser over local favorite Denis Savard, and for a September 1982 trade that sent Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin to Washington — a deal widely regarded as one of the most lopsided in team history. He was fired in April 1983 alongside head coach Bob Berry.
